By: Inside Pool Magazine Staff
Vietnam’s rise in the world of three‑cushion billiards continued with a championship performance at the 38th World Championship for National Teams in Viersen, Germany. The Vietnamese duo of Trần Quyết Chiến and Nguyễn Trần Thanh Tự secured the title after a strong run through the knockout stage, defeating Germany in the final.
The tournament featured 16 national teams competing in a group stage followed by elimination rounds. Vietnam advanced to the final after a tightly contested semifinal against Sweden. In that match, Quyết Chiến delivered a crucial 40–36 victory over Swedish legend Torbjörn Blomdahl, setting the stage for the team’s advancement.
Team USA, represented by Raymon Groot and Pedro Piedrabuena, impressed early by finishing atop Group D before their campaign ended in the quarterfinals against Sweden. The Americans forced a deciding scotch‑doubles tiebreak but fell 15–12.
Vietnam’s victory further cements Southeast Asia’s growing influence in carom billiards, where players from Vietnam and Korea have become consistent contenders at major international events.
